Excerpts from his obituary published in The Baltimore Sun, Nov 15, 1955, page 19

For years known as one of Baltimore's best private grocers.

The firm which bore his name at 844 Park avenue closed in 1942 when the gas and tire rationing of World War II restricted his deliveries to customers living in the northern suburbs.

Born and educated in Baltimore he went into business for himself at the turn of the century. His business thrived until 1929, but after that "it was not so good" recalled Mr. Appleby.

Survived by a son -- Joseph Lamb Appleby, Jr.
