Gertrude E. Spangler
Gertrude E. Spangler, 86, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, in a local care center.

She had lived in Lake Charles for the past 63 years. She moved from Galax, Va., to Lake Charles in 1941. She was a member of First Christian Church, a member of the Gamma Chapter of Gradale Sorority and a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of W.B. Williamson American Legion Post. She was a member of the Lake Charles Symphony and Rosa Hart Theater.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ann C. Blaney.

Survivors include her husband, Matthew McClanahan Spangler of Lake Charles; one daughter, Susan Spangler Simmons and husband, David, of Cumberland, Va.; one sister-in-law, June Anne Chewning of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren, Glenn M. Simmons and wife, Carolyn, of Richmond, Va., David B. Simmons and wife, Rhonda, of Disputana, Va., Brian Simmons and wife, Katherine, of Taipei, Taiwan, and Sgt. David Blaney of Fort Bliss, Texas; three great grandchildren, Hannah Simmons, Russell Simmons and Sara Elizabeth Simmons; a niece, Pam Bravard; and a nephew, Peter Chewning, both of Washington, D.C.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Prien Memorial Park. The Rev. David J. VanHeyningen will officiate. Arrangements are by Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.
