Salem - Mabel was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, one of six children of Peter and Bertha (Laasch) Hoof. A high school valedictorian, she graduated from Northwestern Hospital School of Nursing in 1946 as a member of the US Junior Nurse Corps. She married Walter DePuy on February 12, 1947 in Minneapolis.

Walter and Mabel moved to Salem in April 1948. She worked as a registered nurse at Salem General and Salem Memorial Hospitals for 10 years, the last five as a relief night supervisor. In 1964 she and her husband established the Walt DePuy Builder and Realtor company, which they operated until his death in 1973. Mabel continued to manage their Ivanhoe Apartments and served as the executive Director of the Salem Apartment House Owners Association for 12 years until her retirement in 1985. She was instrumental in establishing the state Affiliated Rental Owners Association and served as its President several times.

Mabel was involved in various community activities as a member of the Marion County Health Advisory Committee and Solid Waste Management Waste Advisory Committee, and Chair of the Marion County Health Volunteers Committee as well as the Board of Equalization. She enjoyed many activities, especially crafts, reading and quilting, and was president of the Mission Mill Capital Quilters for several years.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband in 1973 and their son Walter Jr. in 2001. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Dianne and John Corso of Anacortes, Washington; daughter Leslie Ann Johnson of Salem; daughter-in-law Naomi DePuy of Springfield; grandchildren Richard and Michael Johnson, Andrea and Christopher Corso, and Walter Alexander DePuy; and great grandchildren Kai, Elsa, and John Carl.

Mabel was a long time member of Trinity Covenant Church in Salem. A memorial service will be held there on June 1 at 10:00 AM. Memorial donations may be made to Salem Health Hospital or Trinity Covenant Church.
