The Scotsman - Tuesday 18 May 1937, p 11:
ABERDEEN MAN'S DEATH ON SOUTH SEA ISLAND
Ex-Secretary for Native Affairs in Fiji
Auckland , N . Z . (Received Yesterday)
With only his native servant beside him , Mr Kenneth James Allardyce, formerly Secretary for Native Affairs in the Fiji group, Mr died on the island of Na Bavatu, in the Lau group.
Mr Allardyce had a beautiful home on a hill overlooking Na Bavatu, nearly 200 miles from Suva. There he lived alone, except for his servant and the native labourers who worked on his plantation.
He contracted an illness which occasionally attacks Europeans in the islands and knowing that he was dangerously ill sent his boys away in a boat to obtain medical assistance from the nearest Government station. While they were absent he realised that he was sinking and, calling the one servant who had remained, gave instructions as to his burial.
When the party returned he was dead. A letter which he had written was found on his bed.
Mr Allardyce was the son of Colonel Allardyce of Aberdeen, and a brother of Sir William Allardyce formerly Governor of Tasmania and Newfoundland. He entered the service of the Fiji Government as a cadet in 1898. He became successively District Commissioner Native Commissioner, and Secretary for Native Affairs. He commanded the Fiji Labour Corps during the Great War for two and a half years and was awarded the M.B.E. for his services. — Reuter .
