"After completing his residency at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Abrutyn joined the CDC, where he chased down outbreaks of infectious diseases all over the world as a member of the Epidemic Intelligence Service. This job sometimes put him at great personal risk, such as the time he experienced cholera firsthand while investigating an outbreak.
He returned to Philadelphia as a postdoctoral fellow in infectious diseases at the University of Pennsylvania and later became a faculty member at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Medicine and Public Health. One of his great pleasures was teaching; his students loved him both for his unique talent as a teacher and for his humanity as a physician. When Drexel University College of Medicine assumed responsibility for the Medical College of Pennsylvania, he became Associate Provost and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, positions in which he developed an even broader view of medical education. During all these transitions, he remained an active researcher best known for his work on infectious endocarditis. He knew first-hand the joys and the frustrations of being a clinical investigator.
His contributions to American College of Physicians extended well beyond his participation as editor of the Annals of Internal Medicine, for 29 years. He also served as ACP Governor for the Eastern Region of Pennsylvania from 1992 to 1996 and was honored as Laureate of the Pennsylvania Chapter in 1997. In 2001, he was elected to Mastership of the ACP, an honor that gave great pleasure and pride.
Eli's personal life reflected a person who was fully engaged in the world. He was an avid sports fan, demonstrating an interest of fanatical proportions when he once signed himself out of the hospital to attend a Philadelphia Eagles championship playoff game. He was a mediocre but enthusiastic poker player. He enjoyed fine food and taught himself the art of French cooking. Classical music was one of his passions: For almost 40 years, he held season tickets to the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Eli always acknowledged that his wife, Leslye, and his sons, Alex and Adam, formed the loving base for his accomplishments.
