William "Bill" Thomas Brown of Pensacola, Florida
March 28, 1930 - September 15, 2018
William Thomas Brown, of Pensacola for the last 50 years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2018.

Bill was born March 28, 1930, at the beginning of the Great Depression, in Mobile, AL, where he spent his early years. He attended Murphy High School and there met his beloved future wife, Valerie Buckley. He was a 1952 graduate of Auburn University, known at that time as the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi social fraternity. Upon receiving his degree in Mechanical Engineering he accepted employment with the Union Carbide Corporation, the prime operating contractor for the US Atomic Energy Facility at Oak Ridge, TN. He held a “Q” clearance (Atomic Energy Commission Top Secret) during that time. Before relocating to Oak Ridge, he and Valerie were married, June 6, 1952, in the Westly Chapel Methodist Church in Mobile.

After four years in Tennessee, he accepted employment in Mobile with the National Gypsum Company as Project Engineer, which continued until 1960 when he was employed by the US Air Force at the Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile. Upon the closure of the Air Force Base in 1968 he relocated with his family to Pensacola, FL and was employed by the US Navy on the staff of the Chief of Naval Education and Training. In the final years of his career he became the US Navy’s liaison to the other four military services on matters of Inter-service Training. In 1992, he retired from the position of Special Assistant to Vice Admiral Jack Fetterman, Chief of Naval Education and Training.

In the 1980’s, Bill was appointed to and served six years on the Pensacola City Planning Board. Later he was appointed by the Escambia County Commission to chair an organizational committee to formulate the first Planning and Zoning Board for the County. He served two years as Chairman of that Board after its establishment. He is a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

After retirement, he was active as a supporter, as well as a participant, in the art community of Pensacola. He served on the Board of Directors of Artel. Inc., a non-profit local art gallery for three years and later was a Founding Member of Adams Street Artists, Inc. He served for a number of years on the Board of Directors of that gallery which was later renamed Blue Morning Gallery. He was also a member of the Pensacola Museum of Art and a long-time supporter of the no longer existing Arts Council of Northwest Florida. In 2001 he was presented with the Art Longa, Vita Brevis (Life is Brief, Art is Forever) service award by the Arts Council. Additionally, Bill served for many years on the Pensacola Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival Organizing Committee.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Beulah Grace (Webb) and Frank Ennis Brown, Sr. and his older brother, “Sonny”, Jr. His beloved wife of 58 years, Valerie, passed away June 2, 2010.

He is survived by his two beloved children, his son, Frank Reid Brown and his daughter, Stephanie Brown Fellner and her husband, Tom, and two much loved granddaughters, Chloe Gibson and Carly Reid, of Greenville, SC. Bill was fondly called “Pa Pa” by Carly and Chloe.

Visitation will be held 5-7pm Friday, September 28, 2018 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Graveside Service for family and invited friends will be held 10:00am Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Bayview Memorial Park on Scenic Highway. Memorial Service will follow at 11:00am at Trinity Presbyterian Church with Dr. Hugh Hamilton officiating.
