Philip A. Spear, of North Nobleboro, passed away quietly on Tuesday evening in Damariscotta. He was 92.

Born in Rockport on Jan. 16, 1912, to L. True Spear, Sr. and Ethel Wall Spear. Philip was possessed with an adventurous spirit and was always full of life. He was someone who was always remembered fondly by anyone who met him.

He was locally famous as an endman in minstrel shows, which spanned eras from blackface to fright wigs. He was auctioneer at North Nobleboro Day for 20+ years and was instrumental in helping to raise funds to keep the local church and community hall active.

He married Alice Gay of Rockland in 1938 and they were together for 63 years, before her passing in 2002. A son, Peter predeceased him in 1979 and brother, L. True Spear, Jr. in 1986.

Surviving are daughters, Judy Spear of Brooksville, and Gay Spear of Jefferson; son, Tom Spear and his wife, Carol of Atoka, Tenn.; brother, Ross Spear of Kittery; sister, Thalice Goodridge of Rockport; granddaughters, Leigh and Lisa Spear of Oak Park, Ill.; grandson, James Spear of Santa Monica, Calif.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 21, at the North Nobleboro Baptist Church in North Nobleboro.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.
