James came from Dungannon, Ireland with his mother Elizabeth and two brothers and a sister. His mother Elizabeth is also buried in the graveyard, but no marker. James writes in his papers about the burial of his mother Elizabeth 200 yards from his home. He bought land on the banks of Falling River, VA over a period of years starting in 1755.
He was a Sergeant in the Bedford Militia.

A source called Virginia Tax Payers, 1782-1787, page 85 shows James McReynolds, 1 taxpayer, 7 slaves, in Campbell, Co.James was initially a carpenter in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He moved to the Shenandoah Valley into Virginia in 1750 and settled near Bedford County, Virginia. He married Mary Bell of Cecil County, Maryland in 1848. This was the same year he was baptized a Prebsyterian. He and Mary had 10 children (9 boys and a girl). His burial is on his plantation at Campbell Co. He emigrated to America with other members of his family in 1737, settling in Lancaster Co., PA.Soon after their arrive in America, James and his brother Robert became apprentice carpenters in the city of Lancaster, PA. James followed the carpenter trade until two years after his marriage.James married in 1748, Mary Bell, and this was the same year that James and his older brother Joseph came under the influence of the Whitfield Revival in PA. They were baptised and joined the Presbyterian Church which religion they both actively supported the rest of their natural lives.James was the first of the McReynolds family to leave the original settlement, migrating down the great Shenandoah Valley into VA in the year 1750. Records show that he was assessed for taxation in Augusta Co. , VA for the year 1750 but could not be located at collection time.The name of James McReynolds appears on Bedford Co., VA work order s as early as 1752. The first land deed of record is dated Dec. 22, 1755 and recorded in Bedford Co. DB 1-72 where he purchased 400 acres on both sides of Falling River.The James McReynolds family was very active in civic and community affairs.They were members of the old Concord Presbyterian Church and members of the family held various county offices. It is said that when the James M cReynolds family attended religious services their negroes attended with them.James McReynolds attained the rank of Sergeant in the Bedford Co . Militia during the Rev. War. His service record has been DAR approved.The will of James McReynolds dated April 23, 1803 is recorded Jul y 13, 1807 in Campbell Co. WB 2-326.James and Mary (Bell) McReynolds and other members of the family are buried in a family plot on their plantation located about seven miles from Spout Springs, Appomattox Co., VA.! As supporting evidence that sons Joseph and James died prior to the decease of their father, and without issue, the court order found in Campbell Co. WB 2,page 366, dated Jan 14, 1808, is included here:"By order of Court to us directed we have this day met at house o f Oliver McReynolds for the purpose of carrying into effect the said order and finding that each share of the Negroes belonging to said Estate is worth one hundred three pounds and fifteen shillings have divided and allotted them among the different legatees in the following manner:1. Unto orphans of Thomas McReynolds2. Unto John McAllister3. Unto orphans of John McReynolds4. Unto Samuel McReynolds5. Unto orphans of Robert McReynolds6. Unto Archibald McReynolds7. Unto Oliver McReynolds Recorded June 13, 1808 Signed: Thomas Dixon,Benjamin Hunter,Robert Hunter.

McReynolds Family Cemetery-0.6 miles south of the Route 647 bridge over Mountain Run and Falling River and about 0.6 miles northeast of the Route 648 intersection with Route 679. It lies about 450 yards west of Falling River and 200 yards SE of an old stone foundation of a home built in 1762 where a branch enters Falling River from this location.
The cemetery is currently in Appomattox county.
The cemetery has been enclosed by a stone wall.
The grave marker consists of a base of fieldstones rising approximately 3 feet high. Mounted into this base is a bronze plaque 12 x 20 inches.
