Fred L Taylor, 85, of 411 Castleton Ave, died at 1:50pm Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital. He operated a variety store in Mt Vernon for many years and also operated a restaurant.

He served as a Sergeant Major with the U.S. Army during World War l

Mr Taylor attended Southern Illinois Teachers College and attended the Methodist Church.

Mr Taylor was born June 5, 1891 in South Dakota (should be "New Douglas IL"), the son of the Rev J A and Mary (Lindley) Taylor. He was never married.

Burial in Oakwood Cemetery.

Survived by a niece, Mrs Mary Stanish of Petersburg; and great nephews and nieces of Petersburg.
He was preceded in death by a brother and by a sister, Blanche Hake.
