He was born at "Glenora Plantation", Washington Co, Mississippi. Family story states - His father had taken him to visit his Aunt at "Longwood Plantation" - he ate a piece of "gone bad- mince meat pie" and Little Merritt, not four years old, died of Food Poisoning His mother, even when near 100 years old, would hold back tears, when talking about darling little Merritt. When she said good- bye that morning, she didn't know she would never see him again.

A doctor's death certificate states he died of Intermittent Fever (Malaria)

He was buried 12 Feb 1883, as shown on the plat of his grandfather - the Minor Barbee Redd Williams Cemetery plot at Bellefontaine.
