Mrs. Leonard Bashaw, 71 years of age and a resident of Montgomery county since
1868, passed away at the home of her son, Millard L. Bashaw, in Pilot Grove
township, Friday, January 20. Funeral services
in Lowman chapel were held Sunday, January 22,; Rev. J.W. Stokesbury of the
Elliott M. E. church preaching the sermon. The pallbearers were Mrs. Bashaw's
five sons,George, Millard', Herbert, Charles and David and her grandson, Will
Donohue, of Red Oak. Burial was in Lowman cemetery. Mrs. Bashaw's maiden name
was Abigal M. Downing. She was born in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, January 12, 1840,
and was
married there March 29, 1860, to Leonard Bashaw. They came to Iowa to
make their home in 1868. She is survived by Mr. Bashaw, eight children and 34
grandchildren. The children are Mrs. J. W. Donohue and
Mrs. Anna Petty of Red Oak, D.N. Bashaw of Moville, Mrs. D.J. Weaver
of Griswold, C.N. Bashaw of Gothenberg, Nebraska, M.L. Bashaw of Pilot Grove
township and H.L. and G.H. Bashaw of Villisca. All of the
children were at the bedside when she passed away. "Mrs. Bashaw had
been a member of the M. E. church since she was a girl. She was a
loving mother, a kind and affectionate and helpful wife and those who
were her closest associates can best testify to the consistent Christian life
she lived until the Master summoned her home.
