Longtime Nikiski resident Peggy J. Smith, 64, died May 1, 2004, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. A funeral was held with visitation at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Highway. After the funeral, a graveside service was at Kenai City Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born July 9, 1939, in Visalia, Calif. She moved to Alaska in July 1985. She worked as the store manager for Tesoro for 10 years until retiring in 2002. Her family wrote that she was well liked by her fellow employees. "Mom was a gentle, supportive mother and grandmother. She was devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and toy poodle, Narla. Mom thrived when the grandchildren were around her. She was so special that everyone who knew her eventually called her 'Mom.' She was a sweet person who always had a smile for everyone. Her family and friends will miss her terribly." Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her son, Robert Smith Jr., in 1998.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Robert Smith of Nikiski; daughter, Karen Barngrover of Kenai; sons, Calvin Barngrover of Nikiski, Jewel Bradford of Funny River, Josel Bradford of Wenatchee, Wash., and Rick Smith of Port Angeles, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Arrangements are with Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
