Elaine Tonniges, 92, of Stromsburg died Sept. 10, 2018, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Revs. Patrick Sparling and Christopher Ramstad officiating. Interment will be in Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Friday at the church.

Elaine was born July 13, 1926, in David City to Edgar and Emma (Wood) Martin. She attended country school and graduated from David City High School. Elaine attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and taught school for a few years. Elaine then worked for Elgin Watch Company in Lincoln prior to her marriage to Elgin Tonniges on Feb. 20, 1954, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in David City.

Elaine was a homemaker and worked the Tonniges Truck Gardens with Elgin’s mother for several years. She drove the school bus for Osceola Public Schools for 24 years. She was engaged with the students and the parents and enjoyed going to all types of school events. Elaine followed her own two boys in their activities, as well as their children’s activities.

She kept in touch with people over the years by remembering them through Christmas cards and birthday cards. Elaine was a 60-year member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was active in the church choir and sang many solos over the years.

Elaine is survived by her son, Mark Tonniges of Winside, son Duane (Linda) Tonniges of Columbus, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren,

Sister Jean Hansen of David City, sister Donna Lightbody of Lincoln, sister Maxine Riddle of David City, sister Jacqueline Mahlin of David City and sister-in-law Kate Martin of David City.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Emma Martin, husband Elgin Tonniges, an infant sister, brother Louis Martin and sister Gail Groulik.
