United States Military Veteran. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was the son of General John S. Gano and Mary Goforth Gano. His parents were some of the earliest settlers of Hamiltion County, Ohio. His father was a an officer of the War of 1812, while his grandfather was a District Court Judge and an officer in the Revolutionary War. He lived in Hannibal, Missouri for a considerable number of years, before returning to Ohio before his death. He died in Mount Healthy, Ohio in 1854 when he was 56 years old. He was initially buried at the Court Street Baptist Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio and was later removed to Spring Grove in 1868.
