He was born March 2, 1937, to Daniel Reid and Alice Collins Conway of Maysville, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wilbur, sister Hazel and great-niece Sarah Huffman.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anna Ruth Carper Conway; sons, Thomas Reid (Julie) and John Timothy, and grandson David; beloved niece, Nita Smith (Frank) and nephews, David Huffman (Becky) and Dan Huffman (Linda); great-nephews and nieces, Thomas Jared, Alexander (Lauren), Daniel, Matthew, and Mary (Dan); Parker and Summer.
Tom graduated from Methodist College and received his Master's from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also did post-graduate work at Duke University. He served as Pastor in United Methodist Churches in the North Carolina and North Georgia Conferences for over 50 years. He was active in teaching and curriculum development in both North Carolina and Georgia public schools. He taught history and traveled as an educational commissioner in developing an African History curriculum. Tom was active in hurricane relief missions in Haiti and Biloxi.
Throughout Tom's life, he participated, officiated and coached many sports, and was a devoted Tarheel fan. Along with Anna Ruth, Tom was an active Junaluskan, serving in multiple roles. A celebration of Tom's life will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, September 30, at Garrett Funerals and Cremations in Waynesville.
