JOAN MARKHAM
AGE 94 YEARS

Joan Markham Of Mashpee, passed away peacefully, on August 5, 2018, at Cape Cod Hospital, with family by her side. Born on July 31, 1924 in Braintree to Edward and Rose (Brown) Barrett, she was the youngest of eight children. Originally from Quincy, her family later moved from Maine to Washington D.C. where she graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1940.

She married Jimmy Markham on November 9, 1946 in Washington, D.C. She then went to work for the U.S. Justice Department and later transferred to the New York City office after her husband graduated from Georgetown Law School. They eventually moved back to Massachusetts to raise their family.

Having lived in Scituate, Marblehead, and Fort Myers Beach, FL, the ocean always gave her great comfort, and summer visits to Martha's Vineyard or Long Beach were sure to put a smile on her face. Joan was a true Jazz lover and was a voracious reader, lifelong learner, a self-proclaimed political junky, and was constantly planning her next adventure.

She is survived by her daughter Ann Magner of Weymouth, son James E. Markham, III of Marstons Mills, daughter Tricia Nilsson of Mashpee, son Joseph Markham of Kingston, and 10 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 29 years James E. Markham, Jr.

The Interment will be on Monday, September 17 at noon in Wildwood Cemetery
34 Palmer St, Winchester.
Joan was a U.S. Navy Veteran's wife and grandmother to an active duty U.S. Navy Sailor.
