William Esselman moved here from Tennessee to Texas after hearing about some good farm land over in Waxahachie. When he got here he was not impressed being that the plains were flat and it did not look like the mountains back home. Being his wife was coming by train with their children, he sent a telegraph back home to tell her and the kids to stay there. The telegraph did not make it back in time to tell her to stay in Tennessee, so they were on their way. After making it here, the Esselman family opened a store in Waxahachie and were active in the community. When William's wife Elizabeth died he was sad. Sad enough that he used to sit in his rocker with Elizabeth all the time on their front porch. When she died he moved his rocker inside. One of the kids asked him why did he move the rocker inside and he said there was nothing beautiful for him to look at anymore. He followed right behind her being he died of a broken heart.
