Dennis came to this country from County Roscommon, Ireland, c 1790, supposedly with a brother, and settled in Washington County, Maryland. He had a farm about 3 miles from the Potomac, across from Harpers Ferry. Dennis served a number of years as Justice of the Peace and as Magistrate for Washington County. He also served as a Captain during the War of 1812 and was wounded at Bladensberg. Dennis married Amelia Charlotte Cooper on 5 June 1826, in Frederick County, Maryland.
Per court records, Dennis O'Byrne died in 1842 and, per Cardinal Gibbons, was then aged 70. Dennis attended church at St Peter's in Harpers Ferry, where he was buried.
