Delora Beatrice Jordan Catchings was born March 19, 1915 to the late Fred Jordan and Cora Scales Jordan in Murfressboro, Tennessee, the youngest of ten children. She departed this life on Saturday morning, July 6, 2013, in Phenix City, Alabama.

Her love for God, family, and humanity inspired her to accept Jesus Christ into her life at the age of twelve. She united with First Baptist Church of Murfressboro shortly thereafter.

She attended elementary school at Bradley Academy and graduated from Holloway High School in 1933. She was greatly influenced by her father, mother, and siblings, who were raised with a great sense of obligation to, and love of, learning.

Delora entered Tennnessee State A&I College (now Tennessee State University), Nashville, Tennessee in 1933 and graduated four years later in 1937. She was active in the Alba Rosa Club, the Literati Club, and was initiated into the Alpha Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., during her years at "Dear Old Tennessee State College."

Upon receiving her degree in education, she accepted a teaching position in Mitchell County, Georgia, a place deemed "too far from home" by her mother. In Mitchell County, she fell in love and married a handsome farmer, Cecil Thomas Catchings. They were united in holy matrimony on September 14, 1940, in Murfressboro. They were blessed with three sons, Cecil II, and later, Timothy, and Fred.

She cared for her boys and her husband as a beautiful example of being a working wife and loving mother. Though she stayed in continuous contact with her family (who adored "Beatrice"), she was equally involved with her husband's family. "D. B.", as she was referred, was an extraordinary hostess, mentor, and sometimes mother figure for Cecil's nephews and nieces.

"Mrs. Catchings" enjoyed forty-one years of teaching the children of Mitchell County; she retired in 1980. She taught at Oak Grove, Hall Church, Rockdale, Camilla Consolidated, and Mitchell County High Schools. Much of her time was devoted to teaching Sophomore English in room 31. She served as Senior Class Advisor for Camilla Consolidated School's classes of 1960, 1964, and 1968.

She joined her husband's church, St. Peter A.M.E., where she sang in the adult choir and served as church secretary for "ninety-years." She was a member of the church's auxiliary, the Estell Jester Social Church Club. Delora joined the Delta Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, in the late 40's and served until she was unable to attend meetings in Albany in 2000. For years her colleagues, family, friends, and students from Camilla were able to attend cultural and social events like "Fashionetta" due to her affiliation with the sorority. She attained "Golden Girl" status at the Detroit Boule in 1986 and became a Diamond Soror in 2011. She became a member of Camilla's Les Douze Amies Club in 1990.

During her later years, she was fortunate to have a former student, Mr. Mathis Ross, to help her in countless ways. She referred to him as her "angel". Delora moved to Phenix City, Alabama with her youngest son and daughter-in-law in 2010. Maintaining her membership at beloved St. Peter, she was re-inspired by her new family at Sightseeing Road Chapel, Fort Benning, Georgia.

Her health began to fail in April, shortly after her 98th birthday.

She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-four years, Cecil T. Catchings, I, (2004), and her siblings, Clarence (1958); Lillian (1996); DeWitt (1981); Ola (1975); Mae (1904); Corean (2000); Myrtle (1920); Lula (2006); and Fred (1978).

She is survived by her three sons, Cecil T. Cachings, II (Queen), Conyers, Georgia, Timothy T. Catchings, M.D., (Renia Biernacki-Poray), of Waycross, Georgia, and Fred J. Catchings (Sherrell) of Phenix City, Alabama; grandchildren, Carol Missouri, Cecil Catchings, III, George Catchings, Christi Palencia, Nichole Leverette, Celia Conley, Lihu Catchings, Ashley Catchings; great grandchildren, Ryan Catchings, Brionna Missouri, Israel Palencia, III, Jordan Leverette, Kai Palencia, and Brayden Conley; a host of loving and devoted nephews, nieces; other relatives and friends. Devoted friends include Mrs. Claretha Vicks, Mrs. Catherine Bradley, Mr. Mathis Ross, Mrs. Welton Keaton, and Ms. Sandra Daniels.
