Calvin “Cal” Robert Huber, age 80, of Huron, passed away Monday, September 3, 2018, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, surround by his family after a battle with cancer. Funeral Service for Cal was Monday, September 10 at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. A private burial will be at a later date at the Morningside Cemetery in Roscoe, South Dakota.

Calvin (Cal) Robert Huber was born on January 25, 1938, in Selby, South Dakota, to Christian “Christ” and Mary (Fritz) Huber. Cal joined his older brother, Herbert and later Dianna was born to the Huber family. Cal attended grades first to fifth grade in Java School, Java, South Dakota, with grades fifth to eleventh grades in Selby, South Dakota. Cal completed his GED. As a child Calvin was raised in Selby, until 1942, when his family moved to Java, from 1942 to 1949. The Huber family returned to Selby 1942 to 1963.

On May 31, 1963, in Roscoe, South Dakota, Calvin married Phyllis Katherine Werre at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Cal and Phyllis made their home from 1963 to 1965 in Selby. From this union Cal and Phyllis had two children, Kenneth Christ and Elisabeth “Lisa” Joyce.

Cal started working as a young man in the Selby grocery store. This is where Cal learned to the skill of butchering. Cal worked at Smith’s Red Barn in Selby, until he enlisted in the National Guards in 1961 and served until 1963. Cal worked for Bill Henning in Selby and he also returned to work at Smith’s Red Barn. In 1964, Cal and Phyllis purchased the Conde Locker in Conde. Cal and Phyllis returned to Selby for a year where Cal worked at Smith’s Red Barn. In 1969, Cal and Phyllis purchased the Clark Locker in Clark. Cal and Phyllis lived in Clark until 1972, Cal did work as the maintenance of the Clark Potato Plant, until going to work in the City of Clark Water Department. In October of 1972, the family moved to Redfield where Cal became a Redfield City Police Officer. In 1973, Cal went to work for the United States Post Office in Redfield. Later Cal and Phyllis relocated to Huron, in 1996, where Cal continued to work for the United States Post Office until he retired.

Cal made sure he gave his love of the outdoors and his hobbies to his grandchildren. Cal gave the passion of hunting, fishing, classic cars, and watching stock car races to his grandsons. Cal also enjoyed working as a gun smith. Cal had the skills to blue guns and make repairs on most any gun. Cal enjoyed meeting new people and talking about hunting with his customers as a gun smith. He enjoyed his work to restore older guns. He was a good teacher to his grandchildren. Cal enjoyed gardening and being outside with the neighbors. After retiring, Cal found new ways to meeting people he worked as a ticket taker at the Huron Arena and helped at the Beadle County Nutrition Center preparing meals.

Grateful for sharing life is his wife of 55 years, Phyllis of Huron; his son, Kenneth of Sioux Falls; his daughter, Elisabeth “Lisa” and Dale Lewis of Frankfort; his grandsons, Christian Lewis of Lake Preston and Spencer Lewis of Frankfort (Katelyn Renneke of Fulda, Minnesota); his sister-in-law, Janice Schock of Bowdle; and niece and nephews.

Cal was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Christ Huber; his parents-in-law, Emilia “Katie” and Phillp Were; his sister, Dianna and Wayne Flemmer; his brother, Herbert Huber, his sisters-in-law, Mildred Walth, and Leona and Bruce Morrison; and his brother-in law, Delbert Schock.
