First marriage in 1841 to Lorenzo Hicks (1820-1885)

Mrs. Hosea Mann, Sr. died about five o'clock Thursday morning, the 22nd inst. About three months ago she had a paralytic stroke which affected her speech. This was soon followed by another paralyzing her right side, since which time in spite of all that medical skill and loving hands could do she has gradually grown worse until for the last two weeks her death has been daily expected. Her maiden name was Maria Grousbeck. She was born in May, 1829. Her father, Nicholas Grousbeck, of good old Dutch descent as the name indicates, was one of the early settlers of the state. She was one of a large family of children. Now living she has a brother, Foster, in Jacksonville, Vt., and two brothers in the West, George in Wisconsin and David in Oregon. She has been married three times. Her first marriage was to L. Hicks, and Mrs. Wm McGregory of Indian Orchard, Mass., Mrs. Frank Alvord and Leslie Hicks of this town are surviving grandchildren. Her second marriage to George Fox was tragically ended by the killing of Mr. Fox by an infuriated bull, at which time without thought for her own safety she braved the savage beast and with an axe chopped at his head until he left her husband to seize her and toss her about the yard until badly injured she fell by the side of a cart and managed to crawl under it. Her husband, the venerable Hosea Mann Sr. survives her, and one son, Hosea Mann, Jr., and grandson, Ralph H. Mann. She was an earnest, sincere woman, ever ready to respond to calls for assistance no matter from where they came, and the quite charities she has performed with no other thought but to help and make happy, have brightened many a home and left her blessings of grateful hearts. Her funeral will be held at the house at one o'clock Saturday afternoon.
