Sparrell Hale Chitwood was born on February 8, 1847, in Dyersburg, Tennessee, his father, Angeran, was 23 and his mother, Martha, was 31. He married Emily (Emer A.) Pursell and they had four children together between 1868 and 1876. He then married Mary Cassander Stephenson and they had 10 children together between 1880 and 1907. He died on January 2, 1911, in Fannin, Texas, at the age of 63, and was buried there.
