George Bruce Cortelyou III, is at rest after an extensive struggle with Parkinson's and heart disease. George passed away on August 27, 2018.
George was born on April 19, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York to Peter Crolius Cortelyou and Dorothy Isabella Stevens. George was named after his grandfather, George B. Cortelyou Sr., who served several positions in the Cabinet of President Theodore Roosevelt, including Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of Commerce and Labor.
George spent several wonderful summers of his youth with his grandparents at their estate on Long Island, NY.
George graduated from Edmunds High School in Burlington, VT, in June of 1950. George then attended the University of Vermont where he enrolled in their ROTC program. George enlisted in the United States Air Force in May of 1953. On December 18, 1954 George married Patricia Ann Mahan in Sacramento, CA. They had two daughters.
During his military career spanning two decades, George was stationed throughout the world including California, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Japan, Florida, Mississippi and Germany. The family enjoyed traveling the world together. His military assignments included service as an Aircraft Performance Engineer for B-36 "Peacemaker" strategic bombers during the Cold War, as well as a Ground Safety Officer for several air bases.
George loved to tinker with electronics, and he had a passion for making broken electronic equipment work again. After his military retirement from Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM, he opened his own business named "CB World" in which he installed and repaired radio equipment for truck drivers. George loved to repair antique radios, including the radio he and his parents listened to the announcement of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Patricia.
George is survived by his two daughters, Suzanne Divett (Donald) and Carolyn Rowley (Michael), 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Thank you to the staff at The Neighborhood and to his devoted caregiver, Pamela Fuller.
Capt. George B. Cortelyou III served his country with honor and distinction. A celebration of his life will take place at the Strategic Air Command Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. George will rest peacefully in the Cortelyou family plot next to his wife, parents and revered Grandfather in the Memorial Cemetery of St. John's Church on Long Island.
