Virgil Henry Gathings Jr., 61, died Saturday, May 5, 2007, in Wichita Falls. Funeral services were held May 9, in the chapel of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home with Pastor Don Woods officiating. Interment was in Pioneer Cemetery in Graham. Arrangements were under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.


Mr. Gathings, the son of the late Virgil H. and Dorothy Marie (Calhoun) Gathings, was born June 19, 1945, in Graham. He married Bonnie Phillips on April 13, 1967.

He served the country in the United States Air Force during Vietnam and later retired. He worked in crash rescue at NASA and was employed with the Department of Corrections. He was a member of the Burkburnett Gun Club and the National Rifle Association.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Quillin.


Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Bonnie Gathings of Wichita Falls; one daughter, Stephanie Woods and husband Taylor of Abilene; one son, Virgil Gathings III of Wichita Falls; and one sister, Mary Dell Feltman of Arizona.
