Mary Ann Thornton was born about 1823; she was 27 years old on the 1850 census. Her parents were Dr. William Jones Thornton and Paulina A. DeWitt; both of her parents were born in Virginia, and they married there in Bedford County before moving to Tennessee.

Mary Ann married Thomas M. Allen in Fannin County, Texas in 1845. She married Thomas Jefferson Gates in Fannin County, Texas in 1858.

Her exact date of death Is unknown at this time; however, she died before 1897 because, according to the 1900 census, that is the year her widower T. J. Gates married Bridget "Biddie" O'Brien.

According to a newspaper article announcing the death of Biddie Gates (The Bonham Daily Favorite, 19 Jul 1924):

"The funeral [of Biddie Gates] will take place this afternoon at Inglish Cemetery, in the eastern portion of the city, the remains of the other members of the family gone having been removed to that graveyard when the Pace graveyard was taken over by the right of way of the D B & N O Railroad."

Mary Ann's son, Henry Gates, lived in Bonham and was very active in the community, so he could easily have been the source for the "family gone" information in the 1924 newspaper article.
