Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Charles and Amelia Fergen Kester, she was a graduate of Technical High School. She spent most of her career as a secretary.
As a teenager, she was an excellent marksman, winning many prizes. She enjoyed both swimming and ice skating. Being a lover of the outdoors, she and her husband explored the local hiking trails. When the children were young, there was always the annual fishing trips to Quebec, Canada. The three sisters looked forward to their trips to Atlantic City and Pocono Downs.
Jean and Babe traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Alaska and the Canadian Rockies. Prior to her stroke, they spent three weeks in Poland. As "middle-agers," they decided to learn to polka and joined a polka club and enjoyed displaying their talents. They were members of a group that entertained locally. Jean was also a very talented seamstress, making all of the girls' clothes.
She was a devout Christian who served her God and His dear son, Jesus of Nazareth, faithfully. She loved life to the fullest and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Also surviving are three daughters, Debra Gantz, Dalton; Linda Guarino and her husband, James, Blakely; Doreen Klinkel and husband, Kenneth, Abington Twp.; a sister, Shirley Angelis, Lake Ariel; a grandson, Tony Guarino; a great-grandson, Elijah Guarino; nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn, and a brother, Gustave.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to all those who came to Jean's assistance in her hour of need.
Funeral services will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Matthew's United Evangelical Lutheran Church, 425 Jefferson Ave., with Pastor Mary Owens presiding. Interment, Abington Hills Cemetery.
Friends and family may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Leon S. Gorgol Funeral Home, 1131 Pittston Ave., Scranton.
