Noel Ernest Daniells passed away peacefully on August 24th, 2018 in his home in Bakersfield, California. He was 89 years old. He had been dealing with multiple conditions caused by a form of Parkinson’s that had left it difficult to speak, to see and to walk. He was an inspiration to us all as he fought each and every day to carry on.
Noel was born on Christmas Day in Lindsay, California in 1928. We don’t know what his name would have been if he had been born even a day earlier but Noel is what worked for this day. What a joyous gift that his parents Anita Compton Daniells and Alva Adams Daniells and their other children, Patricia, Robert and Jerald received that year. Being the baby in the family, he was called Noelly.
Raised on his family’s olive and orange ranch outside of Lindsay, Noel’s early life involved chores around the ranch and attending the Lindsay Public Schools. He had a wonderful childhood with academic and athletic accomplishments at Lindsay High School. He was the Student Body President and on the track team as a hurdler. He told a story of competing against Bob Mathias the 1952 Olympic star from Tulare High School. The Ranch was a very special place that provided the foundation of our fathers values of hard work, perseverance and the importance of family.
He attended Stanford University with his brother Jerry and graduated with an Economics degree in 1952. He was enrolled in the ROTC and was stationed in Germany after college and worked in communications. One summer in Lindsay, he met Diane Doddridge who was also from Lindsay, California. They eventually married and had four boys, Bradley, Rodney, Thomas and Jonathan. After his time in the service, he decided that he would join the Les Watts accounting practice in Bakersfield, CA where he eventually became a partner. Diane and Noel were divorced in 1964.
Later that year, Noel met Rosemary Lovell, a young woman from Martinsville, Virginia who came to Bakersfield to become a school teacher. They fell in love and they were married in 1965. They had a great life together. They had many friends, enjoyed life in Bakersfield and traveled the world. Rose passed away in 2008.
He was very proud of Daniells, Phillips, Vaughn and Bock, the CPA firm he helped establish and has become a strong practice in Kern County. He retired from Daniells, Phillips, Vaughn and Bock in 1993 but he was not done working. He became the CEO of the Kern Community Foundation in which he helped to build the endowment and to foster the great work that this organization does.
Noel enjoyed golf and was a member of the Stockdale Country Club for many years. He loved rooting for the Stanford Cardinal and the 49er football teams.
But mostly he loved his family. The Daniells Family has had many reunions over the years and had recently come together in May 2018 in Bakersfield, to share time with each other and with Noel. It was a very special weekend shared by all. In his final years, he was able to stay at home with the help of many loving and caring people.
Noel is survived by his son Brad and his wife Michelle from Indianapolis, IN, his son Rod and his wife Lori from Sherman Oaks, CA, his son Tom and his wife Lori from Harvard, MA and his son Jon and Laura from Sacramento, CA. A total of 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren that Noel was very proud of.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate his life on September 8, 2018 at Greenlawn Southwest from 1:00pm – 2:00pm with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers you can send donations to the Kern Community Foundation.
