Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE with Rev. Jaime Farias officiating. Burial will be in Omaha Valley Cemetery in rural Homer. Visitation will begin at 5:00 P.M., with the family present at 6:00 P.M. and a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. on Friday, August 3, 2018 at the funeral home.
Merlin was born on December 13, 1925 in rural Homer, NE, the son of Ray and Cora (Tyrrell) Chambers. Growing up he was active in 4-H, receiving awards for his hogs. He graduated from Homer High School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1944, and was a lifelong farmer. Merlin married Phyllis Smith on December 26, 1948 in Dixon, NE. They settled on the Chambers farm near Homer, where they were blessed with a son and a daughter.
Merlin was a member of the Homer United Methodist Church, where he served as Chairman of the church board. He was also on the Homer School Board. He enjoyed spending time with his family and watching all sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Royals.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Chambers; children, Kevin Chambers & friend Debbie and Leigh Anne (Robin Bates) Chambers; 2 grandsons, Justen R. Chambers and Ryan J. Chambers; 5 great-grandchildren; and 1 nephew, Gene (Deb) Knudsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Cora Chambers; and a sister, Leola (Don) Knudsen.
