Ira Erastas (Rastus) Carpenter was born February 28, 1848 in Lenox, Susquehanna, PA, to George W. Carpenter and Emeline E. Millard Carpenter.

He and Clara Blanchard (Caddie) Smith were married on January 2, 1873 in Kankakee Co. Illinois. Clara B. (Caddie) Smith was born December 18, 1854 in Hallowell, Kennebec, Maine, USA. They had the following children:

I. Frederick A. Carpenter was born October 11, 1874 in Norton, Kankakee Co., Illinois.

II. The birth date for Frank Theron Carpenter is unknown.

*There is no record of him on the 1880 federal census in Salem, Franklin Co. Nebraska, nor on the June 1, 1885 Nebraska census.*

Ira Erastas (Rastus) Carpenter and Sarah Jeannette (Nettie) Guiltner were married on July 5, 1884 in Grundy Co. IL. They had the following children:

III. Ira W. Carpenter was born June 17, 1885 in Hildreth, Franklin Co., Nebraska.

IV. Earl Carpenter was born May 31, 1890, in Norton Township, Kankakee Co., Illinois.

Ira Erastus died on October 19, 1915 from carcinoma of the stomach. He was buried October 23, 1915 in Eldridgeville Cemetery.

The Kankakee Daily Republican obituary for October 20, 1915 reads:
WELL KNOWN FARMER ANSWERS THE SUMMONS; THE FUNERAL
Ira E. Carpenter dies at his home in country Tuesday night; long illness.
Ira Erastus Carpenter, a well known farmer, passed away at his home, six and one-half miles southeast of Kankakee, at 9:50 p.m. yesterday after a lingering illness, The funeral arrangements have not been made.
Mr. Carpenter was born in Luzerme Co., Penn, Feb 28, 1846. He came to Illinois with his parents in 1850. He resided with his parents on a farm north of Ottawa, Ill. where he spent his boyhood days. About 44 years ago, he came to Kankakee County, where he has resided ever since, with the exception of six years, when he lived in Nebraska. He married Clara Miller in 1872. One son was born to this union, Fred A. Carpenter. He married a seciond time in 1884. To this union, two sons were born, Ira W. and Earl A. Carpenter, both of whom live in Kankakee. He is survived by a widow, and two brothers, S.T. and Theron Carpenter of Hildreth, Nebraska.

The Kankakee Daily Republican obituary for October 21, 1915 reads:
The funeral of Ira Erastus Carpenter, the well known farmer, who died at his home, six miles southeast of Kankakee yesterday, will be held at the residence at 9 o'clock p.m. on Saturday. Burial will be at Eldridgeville Cemetery, near Cabery.
