Thomas Edward Baker, 67, of Columbus passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Kobacker House after a short battle with cancer. Tom was born April 7, 1951 to Doyal Linbergh “Lindy” Baker and Leota Inez (Conkle) Baker in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He married Karen (Carr) Baker, who survives, on February 7, 1987.

He is also survived by his sons Brian Thomas (Danielle) Baker, of Columbus, Bradly Edward Baker, of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Shelby Collin Baker, of Columbus, and grandchildren James Marshall Baker and Arianna Lei Baker. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister Connie Lee (Baker) Biggs and his stepmother Mary (Hunt) Baker.

Tom graduated from East Knox High School in Howard, Ohio in 1969. He graduated from Columbus Tech (State) in 1973. He also attended Ohio State University and Franklin University. He retired as a Drafter from Facility Design, Inc. in 2016, having previously worked at ADR & Associates and R.S. Fling & Partners.

He was an automotive enthusiast who enjoyed all things car-related, from mechanical design and aesthetics to performance and racing, in all its various forms. He was especially fond of Ford Motor Company, most notably the Mustang, and Carroll Shelby, even naming his youngest son after the legendary race driver and car builder. Building model replicas of his favorite cars was his lifelong hobby, and he built dozens of them with painstaking attention to detail and authenticity.

Tom also loved road trips, and travel in general. Some highlights for him were trips to Europe and the Grand Canyon. He loved his country and enjoyed getting behind the wheel to see as much of it as he was able.

More profound and evident than his love of his country, his passions and pursuits was his deep love for his family and friends. He always made sure to let those dearest to him know just how much they meant to him, whether with his loving words, his infectious smile, a hug or with his quick-witted and good-natured ribbings.

Above all, Tom was truly an inspiration to all who knew him. Having faced a lifetime of adversity, he was rarely, if ever, heard complaining. He never wanted for sympathy or special treatment. He was loving, kind, caring and compassionate… all while fighting health-related and personal battles most of us will never understand or be made to endure. Through it all, and right up until the very end, he never lost his impeccable, if sometimes twisted, sense of humor or his razor-sharp wit.

His family would like to express their sincerest thanks for, and appreciation to, the amazing people at Kobacker House and Jenna Williamson. Without their compassionate care for all of us, Tom’s final months would have been far less comfortable and manageable.
