Sister Anne (Anne Catherine) Black, age 86, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on August 22, 2018. She was born on December 13, 1931 in Richmond, Virginia. Sister Anne was the youngest of five children born to Joseph and Sarah (Burnett) Black.

Sister Anne joined the Daughters of Charity on June 24, 1952 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. After a period of initial formation, she was sent on her first mission to Immaculate Conception Academy in Washington, D.C. where she served as a business teacher from 1953 until 1963. Due to health challenges, Sister Anne left teaching and worked as a receptionist at Marian Retreat House in Baltimore for a year. For the next several years, Sister Anne served as a librarian at St. Joseph Provincial House in Emmitsburg (1964-1967); Bishop England High School in Charleston, South Carolina (1967-1974); and St. Catherine Labouré School in Wheaton, Maryland (1974-1985). In 1985 Sister Anne was missioned to Villa St. Michael, Emmitsburg where she continued to serve in various capacities: Receptionist at Seton Center, Assistant Librarian, and finally in the Ministry of Prayer.

Sister Anne earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg in 1953 with a major in Secretarial Science and a minor in Library Science.

Sister Anne was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Joseph and her sister, Sister Helene, SP. She is survived by her brother John and a sister, Sister Mary Ellen, OSB, a niece, a great niece and great nephew, and her Sisters in Community.

A wake service will be held on Monday, August 27 at 7:00 pm in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 28 at 11:00 am in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sister Anne’s name to the Daughters of Charity, 4330 Olive Street, Saint Louis, Missouri 63108. Arrangements have been entrusted to the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME in Emmitsburg.
