FUNERAL SERVICES FOR W. H. BLUMENSTEIN TO BE HELD SATURDAY A.M.
The death of William H. Blumenstein occurred Tuesday night at 10:30 at Mercy hospital in Iowa City where he had been a patient for the past two weeks suffering from a lung abcess, the result of an attack of flu. Although he was known to be critically ill, yet friends were hoping for the best and news of his death came as a shock. He was age 78 years, 11 months and 14 days.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the M. E. church, and will be in charge of the the Odd Fellows of Wellman of which he was a member. His son Cecil, of California, is on the way here, and expects to arrive in time for the services.
William Henry, the son of George L. and Elizabeth (Eckhardt) Blumenstein, was born in Ohio, March 18, 1859, and came to Iowa with his parents when a small child. They settled on a farm in Greene township, Iowa county, and later moved to Lime Creek township.
On Feb. 6, 1892, the deceased was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Singleman who passed away in August, 1925. They began their married life together on the farm where they continued to live until a few years preceding Mrs. Blumenstein's death when they moved to Wellman because of her failing health. After the death of his wife, Mr. Blumenstein returned to the farm where he lived with son, Glen, and family, with the exception of several winters spent in California. During his more active years he was widely known as a breeder of Galloway cattle; also as a progressive farmer.
Mr. and Mrs. Blumenstein became the parents of five children, four of whom are living: Mae, wife of Perry Livezey of Iowa CIty; Glen H. of Wellman; Cecil Wl. of Long Beach, Calif., and Geneva of Iowa City. One son, Fred, died in infancy. Besides his four children, the deceased is survived by six grandchildren: Beth and Jean Livesey of Iowa City, Lorene and Harold Blumenstein of Wellman, and Carroll and David Decil Blumenstein of Long Beach. He also leaves three brothers: George of Waterloo, and Frank and Andrew of Wellman. His oldest Brother, Charles, a resident of Des Moines, died a number of years ago, and a sister, Emma, died at the age of 10 years. He also leaves many other relatives and a host of friends.
During his residence in Wellman he was fireman at the schoolhouse for several years, and every school child was a pal of "Bill" as he was familiarly known, and he found much pleasure in his little friends' allegiance. Of a quiet disposition, he had little to say, but had a way of making his presence felt, and he will be greatly missed from among his friends here. He will be especially missed by his children for he was ever a kind and loving father.
He had been for many years a member of the I.O.O.F.; also of the D.O.R. and the Odd Fellows will have charge of the burial services which will be at Wassonville.
