CDR Robert Lee Moss, USN (Ret.), 84, was born August 9, 1934 in Huntington, WV, and died August 16, 2018 in Pensacola, FL.

Bob graduated with a BA in Business Management from the University of West Virginia in 1956 where he was a star halfback on the football team, setting rushing yardage records that have yet to be broken after more than sixty years. One of the highlights of his college football career was playing in the 1954 Sugar Bowl. He was an Honorary Mention All-American and, in later years, was inducted into the West Virginia Football Hall of Fame. In 1956, Bob was a Cleveland Browns NFL fourth round draft pick but declined to play professional football. Bob entered the US Navy and became a Naval Flight Officer, NFO. During his 26-year naval career, he served in three squadrons. In San Diego, he was a navigator and anti-submarine warfare tactical coordinator in Patrol Squadron 48, flying the P-5M Marlin, the Navy's last flying boat seaplane. In Patrol Squadron 6, based at NAS Barbers Point, HI, he flew the P-3 Orion, and participated in deployments to the Western Pacific during the Vietnam War, flying missions in support of the US Seventh Fleet in the Gulf of Tonkin. Here in Pensacola, he was assigned to Training Squadron 10, the Navy's premier squadron for the training of future NFOs. During one of his tours here in the 1960's, he served as Head Coach of the NAS Pensacola Goshawks football team. In 1974, Bob was selected to be the Officer-in-Charge of Task Force 199 Detachment DELTA in Christchurch, New Zealand. This organization's mission was to provide support and coordination for Operation Deep Freeze activities and research in Antarctica. There, in New Zealand, he met and married Jacqueline Ann Armstrong, where their daughter Nicola was born. His next duty station was back in Pensacola, where he eventually retired in 1983. His last assignment was Executive Officer of the Naval Education and Training Program Development Center at Saufley Field. Bob was a lifetime athlete and stayed in top physical condition with vigorous workouts in the gym and in the racquetball court. Even in later years, those who played with him found themselves up against a tough opponent.

He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Jacquie; daughters, Nicola, Terre, and Summer; son, Lance; plus nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind only happy memories.

Bob and Jacquie took great pleasure in entertaining their friends. A dinner party at the Moss home was always a festive and gala event with Jacquie providing a superb gourmet delight and Bob, with his unique sense of humor, providing non-stop laughter. If asked what he enjoyed most in life, Bob would say it was good friends, a good meal, a good book, a good football game, and a good martini. But not necessarily in that order. We are all blessed for having had him in our lives, and we're going to miss this kind and wonderful gentleman.

Funeral cortege will depart Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 11:30am for a Memorial Service at 12:30pm Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at The Naval Aviation Memorial Chapel (NAS Pensacola), with Fr. Michael Hoffman officiating. Inurnment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors at 1:30pm.
