Mary L. Cross, 77, of Oelwein, Iowa, died on Wednesday morning, August 22, 2018 at her home with her family at her side.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 27, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein with Rev. Ray Atwood officiating.
Visitation: 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Monday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein.
Parish Scripture Service: 7:00 P.M. on Sunday at the funeral home.
Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa.
A Memorial Fund has been established for Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Cedar Valley Hospice.

Mary Loretta Urbain was born on June 14, 1941 in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Francis “Gabby” & Clara (Smyth) Urbain. She was baptized at St. Anthony Cathedral in Dubuque. Mary graduated from St. Joseph High School, Farley, in the class of 1959. She continued her education at Clark College in Dubuque for three years. Mary was united in marriage to John Howard Cross on June 13, 1964 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Farley. The couple moved to Oelwein where they were blessed with four children. Mary raised her children and continued her education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette where she graduated with a B.A. in English. Mary taught at Sacred Heart School in Oelwein and then taught Head Start in Hazleton. She moved to Oelwein Community High School where she worked in the high school study hall. Mary then taught the next 26 years at the Oelwein Junior High and Oelwein Middle School, retiring in 2002.
Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Rosary Society, and the Oelwein Retired Teachers Association. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan. She enjoyed playing bridge, trivial pursuit, traveling the world including eleven trips to Ireland, and spending time with her family and friends.
Mary is survived by her Daughter: Caryn Cross of Chicago, Illinois;
3 Sons: Brien (Diann) Cross of Fairbank,
Drew (Kelly) Cross of Volga and
Dustan (Melissa) Cross of New Ulm, Minnesota;
4 Grandchildren: Josh Weaver, Shannon Cross, Conner Cross & Maggie (Austin) Taylor;
Brother: James (Mary Anne) Urbain of Worthington,
Brother-In-Law: Ed Hieb of Marion and many
Nieces & Nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband: John on January 15, 2006 and John’s two sisters: Dee Dee (Pete) Spanjers and Kay Hieb.
