Mary Pat Murphy was born in Billings, Mont., where her father was city freight agent for the Northern Pacific Railroad.
In 1941, the family moved to Fargo, N.D., where Mary Pat attended grades 4-12, during which she performed in many piano recitals.
She spent summers with her grandparents in Montana and loved trout fishing at her aunt and uncle's cabin on the Sun River.
After high school, Mary Pat attended the University of Montana for one year, then graduated in 1952 from North Dakota State College in Fargo with a degree in home economics.
She taught one year at Wahpeton High School in North Dakota.

"Zoom! What was that? If you had been standing on a California highway this summer you probably would have seen our new Home Economics teacher, Miss Mary Pat Murphy, and her roommate buzzing by in two brand new Pontiacs on their way to California.
They drove the cars out for a Fargo dealer and, except for a flat tire and losing each other once in awhile, they had a very enjoyable time."
This taste of California spurred Mary Pat's move there in 1954.
She was teaching in San Lorenzo and attending graduate school at UC Berkeley at the time she met Eivin Brudie, a fellow
Montanan and certified public accountant in San Francisco.
They married in August 1955.
Mary Pat and Eivin had fond memories of their years in San Francisco, where they had five children in quick succession.
In November 1961, when their youngest was six weeks old, the family moved to Anchorage, where Eivin had accepted a job.
Their sixth and last child was born in Anchorage in 1962.
Mary Pat volunteered for many years at Alaska Center for the Environment from the time of its founding in the 1970s.
She and Eivin shared a deep passion for the Alaska wilderness, where they brought their children hiking nearly every week of every summer as soon as their youngest was able to carry a backpack.
Mary Pat would stay up late distributing camping gear, food and fly rods among the packs according to the size of each child, and in the morning the family would load into the Volkswagen bus and head out to the trailhead.
For 30 years, Mary Pat worked alongside Eivin at Brudie & Hunsaker, CPAs, until they retired in 2005.
Eivin died of cancer in 2015, after 60 years of marriage.
Up until the last week of her life, Mary Pat lived in the family home in South Anchorage.
Mary Pat opened their home and was mom to many more than six kids.
Although Alzheimer's struck a number of years ago, Mary Pat continued to recognize familiar faces, read voraciously and play piano.
She remained engaged, intelligent, quick-witted, mischievous and full of love and life up to her final days.
The family is grateful to the team at Providence who worked tirelessly and respectfully to keep Mary Pat comfortable at the end.
They also thank the devoted Midnight Sun homecare staff who, along with daughter, Nina, looked after Mary Pat at home when Eivin was no longer able to.
