Obituary for Ann Ashman
Lois “Ann” Ashman, 81, of Kankakee and Cullom passed away on Friday, August 17, 2018 in Gilman at Gilman Healthcare Center. She preferred to be called Ann. She was born on December 2, 1936 in Cullom, the daughter of Landon and Verna (Winters) Tinker. Ann married Robert Ashman on May 19, 1956 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cullom.
Ann was a member of the American Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and served in every capacity possible. Quilting was her passion after retirement and she and her “Ladies” made over 100 quilts a year. She also enjoyed reading and was a member of the church book club. Ann was an adult reading tutor and volunteered at the Kankakee Y.W.C. A. Another passion of hers was music. As a young adult she was a member of the Mrs. and her Misses. She played piano, trumpet and sang with them at many events.
Ann loved spending time with her grandchildren, attending their sporting events and school functions. Every year she would host “Grandma Week” with all 6 grandchildren.
Ann loved to travel across the United States and Europe including a trip to Paris that she and Bob won at a Church auction. She also liked to draw and was avid at cross stitching. She enjoyed working outdoors with her flowers. She loved the Chicago Blackhawks and Cubs and knew all of the players and their stats.
She is survived by her husband Robert Ashman of Kankakee and now Ashkum; one daughter Marsha (Rodger) Alvis of Flint, MI; two sons Dave (Judy) Ashman of Chebanse and Derek (Peggy) Ashman of Kankakee; grandchildren Kirstin and Bryton Ashman, Matthew and Briana Alvis, Amanda (Matthew) Meyer and Shannon (Andrew) Kempen; great-grandchildren; Peyton and Andie Zeedyk, Rowan and Trevor Meyer, and Braden, Bella and Ben Kempen.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 4-8pm at Schreffler Funeral Home in Bourbonnais. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 24, 2018 at 10am, with visitation starting one hour prior, at American Lutheran Church in Bourbonnais. Rev. Emily Sauer will officiate the service. Burial will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Cullom. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family wishes to thank the Gilman Healthcare Center for their loving care to Ann.
