Obituary - WIDOW OF OGDEN'S FIRST MAYOR DIES. Mrs. Nicoline Erickson Farr Came to Utah From Norway in 1854. [Special to The Herald-Republican]. Ogden, April 7.- Mrs. Nicoline Erickson Farr, 76 years old, widow of Lorin Farr, Ogden's first mayor, died tonight of general debility at her residence, 2072 Washington avenue.

Born in 'Fredrlekstadt, Norway, she was converted to the Mormon faith in 1852 and came to the United States the next year. With her sister Mrs. Caroline Williams, she came to Utah in Hans Olson's oxteam company, reaching Salt Lake in 1854. A year later the two came to Ogden, where they were pioneer Norwegian settlers.

She was married to Lorin Farr in January, 1857. Her husband died six years ago. She was the mother of Lorenzo Farr, Mrs. Laura Harris, John Farr, Mrs. James Wothersoon of Ogden, and Mrs. George W. Driver of San Diego.

History - Nicoline Erickson Farr was born in Norway, where through her school friend, Caroline Albertine Sanderson (who later married Richard Ballantyne), was introduced to the Mormon elders. Nicoline would bid farewell to her father and mother. She and her sister, at ages sixteen and eighteen, left for Utah. When they arrived in Salt Lake, Nicoline came to Ogden to work in the home of Lorin Farr. It was there she learned to speak English. She married Lorin Farr in 1858, becoming his fifth wife.

Nicoline's first home was in the basement of another of Lorin's wives home where she lived until after the birth of her first baby. She then moved upstairs to live in Mr. Farr's office with a very small bedroom, where four of her children were born. She was always alone at the births because her husband was very busy. She did all the spinning of flax and wool for all the families. She had learned to do this in Norway. She knit the stockings for her six children to wear and sat up sewing at night by a tallow dip (a hallow dish filled with tallow with a rag for a wick). She sold dried fruit and food, etc. to help make money.

After the Edmund's bill passed, Lorin Farr divided his property among his wives. Nicoline made the most of her portion by adding comforts to her home. She was an avid reader and a quiet, refined lady.

Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel, Hans Peter Olsen Company (1854); Age at departure: 16. Her name is "Nieulana Erickse" on the ship manifest, "Nicholina Farr" on the 1860 Utah census and surname is "Farr" on the death certificate.
