In 1865 he married Civil War widow Martha Pelham. Their children were Charles A. Shultz (1868-?), Elten Shultz (1874-1878), William H. Shultz (b.and d.1877), and Eva Shultz Waterworth (1880-1943).
In the 1880 Census he lived in Mason County, Ill., with Martha, but in the 1890s he moved out west to Washington and started a second family with Martha's first husband's niece, Emma Pelham Shultz (1858-1921). Their 6 children were Elsie (1891-1967), George (1893-1945), James (1895-1940), Emma (1896-1920), May (1898-?) and Frank (1898-?).
