Per 1860 U.S. Census was salesman for merchant, A. Dreifus, In Halifax County, VA.

Company E "Brooklyn Grays", 23rd Virginia Infantry, 3rd Brigade, Valley District, Dept. of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Enlisted on 5/7/1861 at Brooklyn Store & Post Office, Brooklyn, Halifax County, VA., he was mustered into Captain William Haymes' Company, 23rd Virginia Volunteers, as a Private. (This company subsequently became Company E, 23rd Virginia Infantry.)
Listed on June & July 1861 Roll as Absent, Sick leave.
Mortally Wounded In Action 3/23/1862 in 1st Battle of Kernstown, VA.

The 23rd Infantry Regiment completed its organization in May, 1861. Its members were recruited at Richmond and in the counties of Louisa, Amelia, Halifax, Goochland, Prince Edward, and Charlotte. This regiment participated in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign, saw action at Greenbrier River, and took part in Jackson's Valley operations.
It reported 49 casualties at First Kernstown.
