Ray was the son of William R. and Bessie (Brooks) Brown. He was born at the Brooks homeplace and was raised in the Tonk Valley Community. He started school at the Mount Pleasant School; then attented Tonk Valley School and finished High School in Graham.
He married Annie Ruth Driver on May 6, 1939. They had eight children: Betty, Annette, Dennis, Wendell, Barbara, Bobby, Helen and Beverly.
