LT. THOMAS GARDNER III, also known as Deacon Thomas Gardner, married Mary Bowles. They lived in Brookline. Their granddaughter Johanna Gardner Aspinwall (daughter of their son Captain Caleb Gardner) is my father's direct ancestor.

This Gardner family were originally settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The family moved to Muddy River, now Brookline, Massachusetts.

Thomas Gardner III was a son of Thomas Gardner, Jr. and Lucy Smith, and grandson of Thomas Gardner of Roxbury. The Brookline house and estate belonging to Thomas Gardner III was documented and can be seen online. My direct ancestor Captain Caleb Gardner was an owner of this house, which then passed to other descendants of Thomas III when Caleb and his second wife Elizabeth Phipps moved to Newport in Rhode Island.

Caleb Gardner and Abial Phipps (Abiel)
Captain Caleb Gardner, son of Thomas Gardner III and Mary Bowles, first married Abial Phipps, a daughter of Captain Solomon Phipps (Ancient and Honorable Artillery Society) and Mary Danforth. Paternal grandparents of Abial Phipps were Solomon Phipps and Elizabeth Wood. Her maternal grandparents were Hon. Thomas Danforth and Mary Withington. Johanna Gardner, a daughter of Caleb and Abial, married Lt. Thomas Aspinwall, son of Captain Samuel Aspinwall and Sarah Stevens. Johanna Gardner (Mrs. Lt. Thomas Aspinwall) was a niece of Peter Gardner and Benjamin Gardner. Peter married Elizabeth Aspinwall, sister of Johanna's husband Lt. Thomas Aspinwall. Benjamin married Mary Aspinwall, a sister of Johanna's husband Lt. Thomas Aspinwall. Johanna was also a niece of Isaac Gardner, Sr. and Susanna Heath. Susanna Heath was Johanna's cousin in the Heath family, because Johanna was a descendant of Elder John Bowles and Elizabeth Heath. Isaac Gardner, Jr. married Mary Sparhawk, sister of Lucy Sparhawk. Lucy's husband Lt. Col. Thomas Aspinwall was the son of Isaac Jr.'s first cousin Johanna Gardner and Lt. Thomas Aspinwall of Brookline. Susannah Gardner, daughter of Isaac Jr. and Mary Sparhawk, married Dr. William Aspinwall, brother of Lt. Col. Thomas Aspinwall. Susannah Gardner (Mrs. Dr. William Aspinwall) was a niece of Lucy Sparhawk (Mrs. Lt. Col. Thomas Aspinwall). Dr. William Aspinwall and his wife Susannah Gardner were also distant cousins by way of the Heath family.

Isaac Gardner, Sr. and Susanna Heath
Isaac Gardner, Sr., son of Thomas Gardner III and Mary Bowles, married Susanna Heath. Susanna Heath and her husband's mother Mary Bowles were cousins in the Heath family, Mary being the daughter of Elder John Bowles and Elizabeth Heath. Thus Isaac Gardner, Sr. married his distant cousin when he married Susanna Heath, because they were both directly descended from William Heath. The name Isaac originates with Isaac Heath, son of William Heath and Agnes Cheney. Isaac Heath was the father of Elizabeth who married John Bowles, and grandfather of Mary Bowles who married Thomas Gardner III.

Peter Gardner and Elizabeth Aspinwall
Peter Gardner, son of Thomas III and Mary Bowles, married Elizabeth Aspinwall of Brookline in 1715. Elizabeth was a daughter of Captain Samuel Aspinwall and Sarah Stevens, and a sister of Lt. Thomas Aspinwall and of Mary Aspinwall (Mrs. Benjamin Gardner). They had one son, Nathaniel Gardner, born 1716, who died at age 19. Elizabeth died soon after giving birth. Peter died early also.

Benjamin Gardner and Mary Aspinwall
Thomas III and Mary's son Benjamin Gardner married Mary Aspinwall, daughter of Captain Samuel Aspinwall and Sarah Stevens. Mary Aspinwall (Mrs. Benjamin Gardner) was a sister of Lt. Thomas Aspinwall and others. Mary's brother Lt. Thomas Aspinwall married Johanna Gardner. Johanna was a niece of Mary's husband Benjamin Gardner. Johanna Gardner (Mrs. Lt. Thomas Aspinwall) was a daughter of Benjamin's brother Captain Caleb Gardner and his first wife Abial Phipps, and Lt. Thomas Aspinwall was a son of Captain Samuel Aspinwall and Sarah Stevens.

Abigail Gardner Wise was a sister of Thomas Gardner III. Abigail's children included John Wise, Lucy Wise White, and others. Lucy is an ancestor of Henry Herbert, father of George Herbert who today is best known for his house, which is the filming location for the popular series "Downton Abbey".

Thomas Gardner and Mary Bowles were the grandparents of Colonel Thomas Gardner, who married Joanna Sparhawk. The couple were first cousins as well as being married.

Thomas Gardner III and Mary Bowles were the great-grandparents of Mary Sparhawk Gardner. This Mary Sparhawk was a daughter of Samuel Sparhawk and Elizabeth Gardner Sparhawk. Thomas III and Mary's son Benjamin Gardner married Mary Aspinwall, daughter of Captain Samuel Aspinwall and Sarah Stevens. Mary Aspinwall (Mrs. Benjamin Gardner) was a sister of Lt. Thomas Aspinwall. Thomas married Johanna Gardner, a niece of Mary's husband Benjamin Gardner. Johanna Gardner (Mrs. Lt. Thomas Aspinwall) was a daughter of Benjamin's brother Captain Caleb Gardner (note 1) and his first wife Abial Phipps. Lt. Thomas Aspinwall was a son of Captain Samuel Aspinwall and Sarah Stevens.

Isaac Gardner, Sr., son of Thomas Gardner III and Mary Bowles, married Susanna Heath. Susanna Heath and Mary Bowles were cousins in the Heath family, Mary being the daughter of Elder John Bowles and Elizabeth Heath.
