Ray Matthews, son of Ella and Benjamin Matthews, was born March 29, 1898, on a farm northwest of Dorchester. He was one of a family of ten children. On August 25, 1925, he was united in marriage to Miss Lillian E. Benson, of St. Edward. To this union was born one daughter and one son. His entire life was spent in Dorchester with the exception of the last six years which were spent in Lincoln. He was a member of the Dorchester Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian, his daughter, Betty Lou Nelson, both of Lincoln and his son, Donald Ray, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, three grandchildren, Michael, Connie and Timmy Nelson; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Parker of Lincoln, Mrs. Ruth Rayer of Julesburg, Colorado; three brothers, William of Dorchester, Earl of Crete, and Roy of Lincoln, and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mrs. Iva Frances, and three brothers, Guy, Ralph and Ben.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Dorchester on Wednesday, August 24, at 2:00 p.m. The pastor, Rev. Sandsted, was in charge of the service. Ray will be remembered as a kind and loving husband and father. Burial was at Lincoln Memorial Park.
