Abraham was a farmer and tanner. He owned a large tannery and bought all the cattle hides he could get. He sold the leather to the settlers to make shoes.

He was also the 1st Sheriff of Baxter County Arkansas, serving his 1st term 1873-1884 and 2nd term 1890-1892. He was killed in the line of duty at age 63.

Wanted
By the authorities of Baxter county, Arkansas, Jesse Roper, who murdered the sheriff of Baxter county, A.J. Byler, on the 15th day of June, 1892. Jesse Roper is about six feet height, weighs about 160 pounds, light complexion, light hair, cut pompadour in front, light mustache, blue eyes, downcast look, small mole or tit on one cheek, age 26. He wears a No. 37 coat and a No. 8 shoe. Roper will probably be armed with a Winchester rifle and pistols. There will be a $1,000 reward paid by our citizens for his arrest and delivery to the authorities of Baxter County. The governor will also offer a liberal reward.

Deputy US Marshall NIX and George STROMER arrested Charley WATKINS, alias Jesse R. RAPIER (ROPER), Saturday. The prisoner admits that he killed Sheriff A. G. BYLER, of Baxter Co Arkansas. He is charged with the killing of a cattle inspector in NE and a man in NM. In all, the officers say there is a reward of $4,700 for the arrest of WATKINS. He is also charged with impersonating US officers.
