Blackfoot resident, Mary Jean Bewley, passed away peacefully at the Willows Assisted Living in Blackfoot, Thursday, August 9, 2018, of natural causes. She would have been 90 next month.

Mom was born in Blackfoot, Idaho on September 23, 1928 to Alice Hocking Karn and Walter H Karn. The family was living in Howe at the time. A sister followed later. Mom was baptized at the Arco Baptist Church. She went through the 8th grade in Howe and attended Arco High School for one year. She finished her education at Blackfoot High School, graduating in 1946. Following graduation, she worked at the Arco Court House.

The next year, she met and married Robert L. Bewley of California. They were married on Christmas Eve in 1947 at the Arco Baptist Church. Together they had five children: June, Bud, Carol, Randy and Mark. The family moved frequently, always following her husband’s jobs. They lived in Utah, California, Washington, and Alaska before it became a state. They lived in many towns in Idaho and finally settled in Blackfoot. After returning to Blackfoot, Mom worked at the Court House until she went to work for the State Hospital South. She finally retired from the State Hospital on July 5, 1991 after 30 years.

Before Dad died he lived at lower elevations in Arizona, California and Oregon, due to health issues. Mom made certain Randy and Mark spent as much time with Dad as her job would allow. They traveled to stay with Dad and visited Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, the Red Woods, Palm Springs and fished off the Oregon Coast.

Following her husband’s passing, she joined “Parents without Partners”. She enjoyed many events and outings with PWP members, including activities for the younger boys, Randy and Mark.

After retiring, she did volunteer work with the local blood drives. She also prepared income taxes as an AARP Tax Aide for seven years. Mom enjoyed traveling with her travel buddy, Afton. They frequently traveled around the West and over to the Black Hills, stopping at Devils Tower on the way. They explored the Pacific Northwest and she also made several trips to Alaska to visit her daughter, June and family. Afton and Mom’s trip to New Zealand and Australia was a real highlight of their adventures together. Mom expressed amazement that a country girl from Howe, Idaho could travel to such exotic places as the Philippines and Australia.

Mom is survived by her children, June, Bud (Mary), Randy (Michelle), Mark (Cindy); grandchildren; great grandchildren; nephews; sister, Sandi; as well as her wonderful friend, Afton Bischoff.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Walter Karn; husband, Robert L. Bewley; and daughter, Carol Bewley.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks for the gentle, tender care provided by the Willows Assisted Living staff and the nurses from Blackfoot Home Health and Hospice.
