Delpha Vieva (Amyx) Ennis was born on July 31, 1927, in Frederick, Oklahoma. She was the eleventh child of twelve children born to Isaac and Lena (Phillips) Amyx. She played basketball in high school and graduated in 1946, from Loveland High School in Loveland, Oklahoma.
Delpha married Oniel Dale (O.D.) Ennis on February 28, 1948, in Wichita Falls, Texas and then they moved to Borger, Texas.
Delpha worked various jobs, including ten years as the Housekeeping Supervisor at the Borger Nursing Home. Later, she started her own janitorial business cleaning many homes, businesses, and churches throughout Borger.
Since 1957, Delpha was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, and participated in United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Red Hat Mammas of Borger. She was a Boy Scout Den Mother and was very involved in all her children’s activities.
Because Delpha grew up in a large family during the Dust Bowl and Depression era, she learned that all of us need a helping hand at times. She was always thinking of others, especially those less fortunate because she remembered the hardships she and her family endured. Delpha anonymously helped the children of many area families by providing them with food, coats, clothes, school supplies, and Christmas gifts. In 1995, she and her daughter, Sheila, were awarded the JCPenney Golden Rule Award as part of the KVII-TV’s Seven Who Care Program. Delpha supported numerous charities and mission work, including her favorite charity, Snack Pak 4 Kids.
Delpha loved to sing, play the piano and guitar, and enjoyed listening to gospel music, especially the Gaithers. Her favorite color was pink, and her hobbies were working jigsaw puzzles, making photo albums and scrapbooks for her family, and reading. Delpha played a mean hand of Skip-Bo cards and was always ready to win a game of 42 dominoes. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family, and her greatest joy was her grandkids. She participated in all her grandkids’ activities, and she was their greatest supporter and biggest fan.
She is survived by one son, Rick Ennis and his wife Sharon, of Lubbock, Texas; one daughter, Sheila Bates of Borger, Texas; one granddaughter, Whitney Bates of Cedar Park, Texas; three grandsons, Caleb Bates and his wife Whitney Brooke Bates of Spring, Texas, and Zane and Eric Ennis of Lubbock, Texas; two sister-in-law, LaVerta Burns of Colorado and Wanda Cook of Washington; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Delpha is preceded in death by her husband, Oniel Dale Ennis; parents, Isaac and Lena Amyx; brothers, Arville, Orbie, Manny, Raymond, Kenneth, Roy, and Curtis Amyx; sisters, Thelma Vadalabene, Ethel Matson, Leora Peterson, and Grace Turner; nephew, Roger Peterson; and son-in-law, Alan Bates.
The family wants to say a special thanks to the BSA Hospice staff, especially the nurses Christi, Vicki, Belinda, Connie, Cassie, Teri, Terie, and Pam for their loving and compassionate care of Delpha this past year. The family would also like to thank Delpha’s special church friends for so faithfully visiting her.
Delpha will be greatly missed by all her knew her, but her love of God and legacy of kindness will live on.
Memorials may be made to Snack Pak 4 Kids – Borger ISD, at 701 Park Place Ave Amarillo, TX 79101 (sp4k.org) or your favorite charity.
