Michael was the son of Ronald and Josephine Campbell who predeceased her son, of Sydney, Nova Scotia; dear brother of Robert and Joseph of Sydney; Terry in Ontario; Ronald Edmonton;; five sisters; Dolores (Mrs Bernard Hawco) Sydney; Joan ( Mrs Malcolm Newberry) in Ontario; Helen (Mrs Terrence Murray) Edmonton Alberta; Cora (Mrs Slyvia Magliaro) in Ontario; and Patricia (Mrs Carl Habisht)in Germany.

He attended Sacred Heart and Park Junior High Schools and was a member of No 6 Medical Company in Sydney and at the age of seventeen he left Cape Breton Island for a forestry job in Port Alberni, British Columbia. While working in Port Alberni he met his wife Vicky and eventually enlisted in the US Army.

With orders for Vietnam, he arrived for duty on January 21, 1968 where he was assigned to and served with B Company, 2d Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, USARV.

On April 26, during a search and destroy operation in Northern Quang Tri Province PFC Campbell was hit and killed by enemy rifle fire.
