Lydia"s Death certificate indicates no date of birth. New River Notes for Dickenson County lists a birth year of 1868 and concurs with the place of birth listed on dc as Trammel but provides no source. It also lists a date of death as January 15, 1926 which we know is incorrect since we have an actual death certificate listing October 1926. This makes us suspicious as to the accuracy of the new river notes, date of birth as well.

Per Elihu Jasper Sutherland's "Some Descendants of John Counts of Glade Hollow":

On 12/9/1884, Lydia married Joshua Colley, in Dickenson County, Virginia. (She was about 15/16; however, per the 1900 census record where she states the month and year of her birth, she would've been 13 or 14 at marriage).

They had the following 12 children (!):

William Pierce Colley

Georgia Ann Colley Mullins

Nancy "Nannie" Colley Damron Sutherland

James Monroe Colley

Noah Colley

Ira Colley

Silas Colley

Cowan Colley

Florence Colley Mullins

Roma Colley Larkin Anderson

Howard Colley

Fred Colley

The 1900 census indicates she, her husband, and eight children were living in the Willis magisterial district in Dickinson county, Virginia. This census record provides her month and year of birth. Therefore I have changed it on this memorial. It indicates that she is 28 years of age and has been married for 15 years. This would make her 13 or 14 at her age at marriage. She had eight children at this time and had last one. this family is living next-door to her husband's brother, Tivis, and his family.

In 1910, the parents and 10 children lived in what had been called Bart Lick but was now called or part of the Willis District, Dickenson County, Virginia. Joshua was a general farmer. Twenty-four year old son, Pierce, was a mule team driver.

The 1920 census reveals that 48 year old Lydia could not read or write but that her lumber mill laborer husband supposedly could.

Died in her 50's of liver cancer. "Signs and symptoms of liver cancer often do not show up until the later stages of the disease, but sometimes they may show up sooner."

Some of the most common symptoms of liver cancer are:

Weight loss (without trying)

Loss of appetite

Feeling very full after a small meal

Nausea or vomiting

An enlarged liver, felt as fullness under the ribs on the right side

An enlarged spleen, felt as fullness under the ribs on the left side

Pain in the abdomen (belly) or near the right shoulder blade

Swelling or fluid build-up in the abdomen (belly)

Itching

Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)

Other symptoms can include fever, enlarged veins on the belly that can be seen through the skin, and abnormal bruising or bleeding.
