Jeff Shortridge Rugged Warrior '61 to '65 Succumbs
to Old Age.
-The Grand Army of the Republic, the ranks of which have been rapidly depleted during the past few years, has lost another of the grizzled warriors of '61 to '65, Jeff Shortridge, late member of Co. D. 39th Vol. Inf. of Kentucky, having answered the long last roll, at his home in Nevis, April 16, at the age of 88 years. Mr. Shortridge enlisted Sept. 20, 1862, and was honorably discharged Sept. 15, 1865, at Louisville, Ky. The family have resided at Nevis since 1913.
-Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church of Nevis, Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Chas. Swindells of Laporte officiating. An impressive sermon was preached from Judges 8:1-2-3 with the central thought of service; "Is not the gleaming of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi-Ezer."
-Ellwell Engelking Post, American Legion, Wm. Ainchaim, commander, paid full military honors to the deceased. Interment was at Nevis cemetery.
-Jefferson M. Shortridge was born in Tazewell county, Virginia, May 24, 1846. Died at Nevis, Minn., April 16 1934. He is survived by his wife, Anna, two daughters, Ellen and Mattie and seven sons, William, Joseph, George, Andrew, James, Darrell and Levi; also two sisters, Mrs. Nettie McBrierty and Mrs. Louise Ralston. The Herald Tribune will be joined by the people of this community in extending condolence to the family in their great loss of their distinguished husband and father.
