Married Clara Vilate Hanks, 7 Nov 1878, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah
History - John G. Felt was named for his uncle John Gillingham Felt of Salem, Mass. This John Gillingham Felt is the third son of Nathaniel Henry and Eliza Ann Felt.
John Gillingham Felt was a highly successful business man of early Salt Lake City history. He married Clara Violet Hanks, daughter of Ephraim Knowlton and Harriet Amelia Decker Hanks. Ephraim Hanks was known as the "Mormon Scout." Harriet A. Decker was Ephraim's first wife of three plural wives. In 1847 Harriet was the widow of Edwin S. Little when she came to the Salt Lake Valley.
Clara V. Hanks Felt had a rich heritage in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including the intimate friendship of her grandfather Isaac Decker and Joseph Smith Jr. etc. Clara was indeed a "Ward Girl" and it appears John G. and Clara Felt stayed close to their childhood homes throughout their lives living on upper Main Street.
Harriet Amelia Decker is the sister of Charles Franklin Decker, husband of Vilate Young. Vilate Young famously lived with John G. Felt's parents in Salem, Mass during the turbulent year 1844. Vilate then was Clara's aunt Vilate! This is a very interesting family link.
It is known that John G. Felt canvassed most of Utah on business trips and maintained a residence in Chicago, IL. Shoes and shoe waterproofing was of interest to his father and uncle for whom he is named; the two of them owning a patent for the same in England in about the year 1868.
