Charles Corbell is the ancestor of many people in Texas today as well as other places. The general consensus is that he was born in Northumberland County, Virginia, the original landing place of ancestor Clement Corbell, in 1805. His parents were William Corbell, a Revolutionary seaman, and Sarah Walston, although this cannot be proven with certainty. His middle name has been speculated as being Asher or Austin. Charles lived in Monroe County, Mississippi for a while. He married Nancy Crenshaw (1813-1894) in 1827. Charles and his family arrived in Sabine County, Texas in 1839. Previously he had purchased multiple pieces of land in Mississippi. He was granted a head right of 640 acres by the Republic of Texas, and 440 acres were surveyed near the mouth of the Sabine River.
There is a family legend that Charles died from wounds in a “gunfight” over property. He was possibly cheated by an unethical land surveyor. This story is totally unsubstantiated. According to a sworn affidavit by wife Nancy, Charles died on 19 Dec 1843. His place of burial is unknown. Charles and Nancy had seven children:
Perry Cornelius Corbell (1828-1896)
Maria Malinda Corbell (1830-1923)
Tillman Avery Corbell (1832-1880)
George Washington Corbell (1835-1923)
Mary Jane Corbell (1837-1890)
Felix H. Corbell (1839-1915)
Sarah Ann Corbell (1842-1883)
